help! laying-in extra wood
« on: December 22, 2013, 02:39:27 AM »
I got a little careless inletting my brass nose cap on a Isac Haines Track kit.  Now the muzzle cap rear edge is about 1/32" out from the wood.  I was told to "Lay in" some matching maple to thick the wood at the nose and then inlet in back in.  The fore end is all ready shaped roundish.  Could I please get some advise on how to put on more wood?  Thanks, Mike

I'd just back it up further.

Slide the nose cap back a 32nd. I'm sure you have a reason not to do this but it would make things easier. Bob.Darn Mike beat me....

Thanks.  I'm dreading backing it up any further.  Tried that a bit already.  Worried I'd have to cut the barrel back and crown it to make it look right.

I will assume that you mean that it does not sit parallel to the center of the barrel. high in the back. If you have a plane make some vener from scrap maple. stain and then glue in. If not use card stock paper stain and glue in a couple layers of it. You need a solid bace when you rivit it to the stock. good luck  ken

Make or buy a new nose cap that is a little longer.

I agree with these folks, I would make a nose cap to take care of the issue.  Brass is easy to work with and you can make everything look right.  You might have to add wood or Acuraglas Gel to the wood inside the cap to make up the difference between the sheet part and the cast part, but no big deal.
