Friday the 13th Buck
« on: December 16, 2013, 07:17:24 PM »
The past two weeks were the MD modern firearm season.  Carried the .270 some days and shot a few does, but some days and spots I carred my 16 ga smoothrifle I finished last spring.  Finally got her bloodied last Friday afternoon, with a whopping 20 yard shot.  That .648 roundball does a wicked job on 'em, turned his insides into soup.   :o  Best part is he's a buck I've never seen or had pics of, guessing my late season turnip/radish plots sucked him in from the neighbors.  AND, still have two weeks of muzzleloader season starting this weekend!!   ;D

Beautiful gun and great trophy. You must feel very satisfied in harvesting such a nice buck with a flintlock smoothbore. Seeing your picture and reading your post causes me to wonder how those who use the space shuttle muzzleloaders can get any satisfaction at all from hunting with such high technology. Hunting with muzzleloaders is supposed to be hard and that only comes with the use of the old design guns.
Congratulations.

Little of both Doc!!  ;)  The one I'm after is easily twice that big, but I've only seen him in August in a neigbor's bean field.  The big boy is a huge 10 and the sighting was only 300 yards from corner of my place, so he's gotta cruise through at some point.  That's what all the turnip/radish plantings are for, it sucks deer in late in the season when all the other food is gone.  Hoping either late muzzleloader, late 2 day rifle or bow season in late January will pay off.  Course he coulda been shot elsewhere by now, too, but hope is alive!
