Patchbox Release
« on: January 16, 2009, 03:29:20 PM »
Several weeks back someone posted pictures of a patchbox release like the one on the J.P. Beck rifle that is on Art Riser's blog. I have lost the pictures. Is it possible that that person could post them again?
Thank you.

Sorry to tell you Dave, but the rifle patch box release  you posted is that of a whale tale Beck.   Beck's signature "duck heads" are very evident in the engraving.   Charlie, the good thing is that you got exactly what you were looking for.   Ron

Here's a release from a signed Beck, just like the Beyers.

It's amazing how those two rifles have the same scratches and dents. Will wonders never cease.

Well thats what I get for not putting titles on my photos. I knew I took pics of a Beyer rifle and though these were them, but you are right the Beyer rifle had the pelican patch box on it.  Sorry bout that :-[. I m just glad you got what you were looking for.  A Beck Just like the Beyers ;D ;D
I am sorry to say that those are the two I have of the Beck rifle. I had more but some how lost them when we partitioned the drive on our computer. I have the Bio in the folder but all the pics went away. These just happened to be on my Photobucket album from a post I did on ALR a while back. Does any one recognize these photos? I would like to restor the missing photos in my file.

I saved this website, it has pictures of a whale tale Beck.  I think it was posted on the old board. In fact looking at some of the scratches, it may be the same piece already shown.

Note that these springs are quite thick. There's a temptation to make them of thin spring steel. Don't do it. The length makes them easy to bend.

Here's another rifle identified as a Beck that was on the David Condon site in October 2005

Speaking of the spring.  I have no problem making the spring.  I always have a problem with the button.  Not on a buttplate like these but on a plate with more of a lateral curve.  I have to cant the button slightly to the side so the button snugs up to the plate and all the fitting plays havoc on the steel.  I heat and bend, fit.  Try again.  Son on.  I've tried peening the button on the spring and silver soldering when I get it right.  I tried forming the spring with a fob forged on the end but I am not that good at fine forge work and eventually wear the steel out.  Any suggestions.

Same thing is required for keys on some fore-ends.  Basically you need a nail header-like device that accepts the spring blank but is angled on top.   1" square steel stock will work if you can get the slot cut in it.  Then mill, grind or file the surface of the form to the right angle.  Get the spring blank orange hot, drop it into the slot, and tapitty-tap with a little ballpeen hammer to re-align and widen the head.  If you grind back the form beyond what the spring head covers, then you can approach it at good angles with the small ballpeen hammer.  I guess if you use mild steel for the spring, you can cold form it and not worry about the heat, which disappears pretty fast.

I can't draw diagrams but maybe you can get the idea.

Of course all this has to be done with a rough blank as the first step.

When I needed to make a key for a double barrel shotgun, I cheated and quickly made the "form" of 2 angled pieces of steel and just held one higher in the vise and clamped the "key stock" between them.  I had to be careful with the peening and it required some cleanup, but it worked out fine.
