One step forward and two steps back!!!

Thought I would share this as it may help save someone's morning sometime As I was setting in some details in my carving this morning I must have forgotten to fully tighten my vice and the rifle spun out of the vice, with my gouge taking a big chunk of wood out along with an important element of my carving.After a cup of coffee and a few colorful words I chiseled a clean square hole about 5/16" deep and cut out and glued in a Dutchman and recarved the element.It should all but disappear(hopefully) during the finish process.

Nice neat job. What glue was used to secure the "patch" and was the glue only applied on the bottom...looks like it. That cup of coffee evidently "settled things down". Guess what happened is an occupational hazard...not the repair 'but the aftermath" which you handled so  calmly.....Fred

That is the great thing about aging guns; it obscures a lot of Opps.   Of course,  there are lots of fine old guns with Dutchmen that no one tried to hide.

Nice job Tallbear, I have done somewhat the same at times and so far no one has made note of it so it must blend in OK. I too am wondering what glue you used for the job.

I used Titebond II which they claim is waterproof. I painted the bottom and the sides of the mortise and the bottom and sides of the Dutchman and then pressed it in place.I left the Dutchman plenty high so I could get a clamp on it without pressing the glue into the surrounding surfaces. The glue just sits on top and is easily removed once dry and shouldn't effect the finish.

I use Titebond III for guns (contemporary guns)  because it is labeled as waterproof.   In fact I just bought a big bottle of it.   I thought Titebond II was just water resistant.   I have used that on inside furniture.    Because I wasn't certain.  I just went to the Titebond site and my understanding was correct; Titebond II is just water resistant.   I does have a shorter working time than TitebondIII.

You are correct just went and reread the bottle it is water resistant not water proof my mistake

I don't guess it makes that much difference unless you soak the stock in water.

Great patch Mitch, a nice tight fit.  Only you (and the rest of us now) will know it's there.

Tallbear, did you use a V gouge and mallet to make your carving lines? Doesn't look like stabbing judging from the photos. Nice work.

I use three different methods when I carve. Stab in with gouges, v tool tool and stab in with Gary's ;little stamping tool. I choose the methods that get the results I desire usually trying to use the same techniques as the original builder whose guns or guns I'm using as a reference. In the pictured carving I first stamped everything in with gouges relived the background and then went  and added detail with both a vtool and with gouges, straight chisels and skew chisels.What tools I use can change from gun to gun depending on what I am looking to achieve.It also can change depending on the hardness of the wood.This was a particularly soft piece (picked out by the customer) so had to adjust my plan a little.
