Repaired old horn
« on: January 30, 2014, 04:36:34 AM »
The split tip on this old horn needed repair before I could put it on a pouch set Im planning...
the repair was made with an old brass thimble and hide glue. Ive seen this type of repain done on a few other old horns. tca

I agree that the brass thimble was a good idea. I too have seen this done on old horns.

Seen this repair on a 1768 engraved horn, but more often have seen linen string, or wire wound around the spout. Can't throw a good old, favorite horn away because of a little crack. Nice job Tim! It is 100 percent period correct. Should look really great with a bag.

Dumb question on my part.  Did you form threads on the thimble on the inside?  Maybe my eyes are deceiving me?

That is a pretty good fix I've seen it done before, good job ! I have seen folks use brass thimbles just because of the way they look . Do you know when the Prairie State Long rifle Show in Princeton IL. will be held this year? Thanks ............. Mike Norin

No threads inside the thimble...just fitted it to the horn tip and glued it.

Works on ramrods too.  I've got a shotgun ramrod that was tipped with a thimble way back when.
