High End Curly Maple
« on: January 10, 2014, 07:30:02 AM »
Since Freddie Harrison has died,  where are you guys getting your high end curly maple.   I need a piece of very fancy, quarter sawn, stump cut, hard maple.   I e-mailed Freddie's daughter but never got a response about them continuing to sell stock wood.

Hi Mark, try NWTimber.com 1-800-238-8036 in Oregon.  Supplier of some
prime wood, they would probably email pictures.  You buy the piece you
selected...no bs  I have a piece of black walnut from them,  really nice.
They handle alot of species. Good luck! Tim

Mark,
I have purchased two stock blanks from Fred's son-in-law (Nathan Cox) in the past month or so.  I don't use the email, but call him on his cell at 731-414-9757.  I talked to him again yesterday about a purchase.  He said that he and another son-in-law of Fred's are planning on keeping the business going.  I think they are still trying to work out how to deal with Fred being gone.

Thanks Roger.   I will give them a call.  I imagine Feddie left a big void when he passed away.    We should all be so lucky.

When I spoke with Nathan at the CLA show, he indicated that the family plans to keep operatiing the Stock Business. That includes harvesting, so we should be able to continue getting blanks into the future. Nathan was very helpful with sending photos of blanks for my inspection.

I bought a curly maple stock from Nathan this summer. Nice wood. Pretty hard. Nathan was helpful and patient with me as I looked pieces over. Prices are higher than other suppliers of quality wood it appears to me however.
