1770-80 Lancaster Boys Rifle
« on: February 03, 2014, 06:28:17 PM »
This is a little Lancaster Rifle based on the work of Jacob Dickert that I just finished up for delivery at the Lewisberg Show.It has a 34" 45.cal tapered and flaired Colerain barrel and was stained with home brewed aqua fortis and finished with Tried & True varnish. As always comments and critiques are welcome.

Beautiful work!  How do you obtain the dark highlights on the brass..as on the butt plate and the entry pipe?

Thanks Guys!!

Oldfox
I used a brass patina from Rio Grande jewelry supply to darken the brass. The label says #331-040 Red Brown to black.

Gunmaker
I received the parts for this gun from the customer and the premade patchbox was one of those parts. The history of these parts is a long and twisting story, but they were from several sources and I don't know the origin of the patch box.I always make my own and this was the first and last premade that I will ever use.As you can see in the pic the hinge is very poorly fitted with huge gaps, but after tossing the supplied RR pipes and pre made nosecap and replacing them with ones of my own making I compromised and used the supplied patch box.Would'nt do it again!!

I saw this gun, and was drawn to it immediately. Perfectly proportioned, it's suited for a smaller framed adult or a teen. Lovely rifle, Mitch.

It's  real nice Mitch. I'd say you captured  Dickert very well in your carving. Should be a very pleased customer.

How did you like working with the " Tried and True " varnish ?    I use it myself, and like it, but others have told me it is  a bit of a pain. If you put it on nice and thin, it works well. Stands up pretty well too.  I used it on my fowling gun, which sees a lot of bad weather .

Mitch,

Quite a finely crafted rifle - very nicely done.

Can you provide the length of the lower forestock and the spacing of the ramrod pipes?  I'm having a devil of a time deciding on dimensions for these details on a 30" barrel with about a 12 1/4" lop later Lancaster profile.

Thanks,

Larry Luck

Bob

I really like the Tried & True. The only drawback has more to do with the weather lately than the finish.Even when I use Chambers Oil Finish I hang the stock outside to dry.The Tried and True is slower drying than the Chambers and the weather did not cooperate.

Larry
I will try to get those dimensions from the customer. I delivered this rifle at Lewisberg and the exact dimensions are a little fuzzy in my mind ;) ;)
