Ram Rod Puller

If you get a ram rod stuck what type of puller do you use.  I'd like to see some pics.
 I need to make me one.
I am wanting one for in the field that can be carried in a bag...

I drill an 1/8" hole through the rod; when it gets stuck, I put a nail (carried in the bag) thorugh the hole, and pull the rod out.  I've never needed more than this.

Just curious but how do you get a ramrod stuck?  The only stuck rod I have seen was  when a student decided to double patch on the cleaning jag.  That was resolved by pouring a little water down the bore to wet the patching.  I have never had a rod stuck in normal loading or cleaning procedures.  Of course I just set myself up for a string of stuck rods.  If you are routinely pulling balls, stop doing that.  Get a C02 discharger.  The nail through the rod does present a safe way to tie the rod off to a tree and pull the rifle from the butt end if you insist on pulling balls the old way.

Find a thin rope/parachute cord.
Tie it high, like a rafter or high branch,
Then a clove hitch over the ramrod with the other end,
and pull.

I have seen rods stuck because the tight fitting jag-patch combo forced some of the patch into the vent cone and the thing couldnt be pulled without some lube first.

The item with the three holes is a small flint striker that I carry in my shot bag. The striker can be used for two things, one starting fires the other, sliding the center hole down over your ramrod to help remove it if stuck. I have never had to use it but a friend did. Worked great!

Thanks Timber, that sounds like a great multi-tasking tool. When summer gets around to getting here I will fire up my forge and try to make one.

Just curious but how do you get a ramrod stuck? 

I seldom get a rod stuck in the bore, but I've had more than one stuck in the thimbles.   Going from 20% RH to 85% RH seems to do a good job of it.

Timber what size are those holes and what size is the item you are using for a striker and rod puller.
  I have seen something like that before but can not remember where.   I would buy one if someone would want to make me one.

Hi,
The striker is 2" long, 1 1/4" wide, and the holes are 7/8"
I don't remember who or where I picked it up from.
I made up a leather sleeve that it fits in and use and old large musket flint.
It doesn't take up much room in the bag.

I do the same as you Habu. All my rods are tapered to near bore size so I drill a small transverse hole and the pick end of my flint tool will fit in to give extra leverage when pulling a tight patch or a stuck ball.

The other thing that can be done is to put a short thong through a hole in the end of your rod and tie a loop. Put your finger/fingers in the loop and give it a yank.

Timber, that little gizmo you use looks like just the thing.

I have a T handle with a 10-32 screw on the end which is what I use.

My ramrods in the gun are just for show, or an emergency.   For cleaning, and loading at the range, I use a steel range rod with a brass door knob on the end.   I have never had a problem pulling it out.    For dry balls and misfires,  I use a CO2 discharger; very easy and SAFE.

Range rods are great for the range, but I don't fancy dragging a steel rod with a doorknob on it through the woods when I'm looking for deer, so my rods are working rods.

I have one of those brass scissor shaped gizmos with leather padded jaws in my range box. I've never used this one but it's handy to have. Our club has a couple of steel forks bolted to the shed where we can hook the handle of a range rod and you merely pull down on the rifle to pull the ball. In the woods, I would work some powder into the vent if I needed to but I don't drywall when hunting. I only do that at the range when I get to gabbin' and get distracted.

Thanks….when I first made it and carried it along, I felt like it was a little out of place….like a chrome trailer hitch.  However, now that it is all discolored and tarnished with powder fouling, it looks just fine and I am not lugging a batch of loose items around in the pouch.  I use the "T" handle more than any other part of it as well…just easier when cleaning.  And then I made this;

The wing nut gizmo just holds a bore adapter and a couple of different size jags together.
