it shows the unfinished rifle,
it has what appear to be 2 bolts under the cheek piece
on the finished rifle of course they are not there..
what in the world are they for?
i would post a pic of them..but not sure thats appropriate

Elk they are temporaries .If you look closely on the finished gun you will see there are two small screws under the cheekpiece .While I'm not sure why they are there, I suspect that they possibly could be holding cheekpiece inlay, the patch box or the patchbox mechanism in place.

Judson Brennan is a master craftsman and a  very good engraver for this type of work that very few muzzle loading builders can can equal.  He has a unique style. That is rare today. It takes a great deal of tallent ,knowledge and courage to even attempt some of the stuff he does. My hat is off to him.
 There are  thousands of longrifles that are hard to distinguish from one another but you can always tell one of his.

Jud is an artist in the fullest sense of the word.  He's fantastic at creating a full composition.  Few, if any are in his class.

Agreed, Jud has long been a favorite of mine.  He's one of the very few who can do a highly decorated rifle that looks right, and not just like a lot of decoration on a long-rifle form- as Jim said, a 'full composition'.  His stuff is just, well, cool. 
I wonder if those bolts tie into tabs to hold the cheek-piece inlay in place, kind of like how the butt-cap on a pistol is held in.
