Making cups and such part 1
« on: April 20, 2014, 03:28:26 AM »
Ok it has taken me awhile but finally was able to get out to the shop and do this I made two things a cup and a small container .. so using both to show you how to put the bottom in the cups.. will be breaking this up into two parts due to the amount of pictures ..
ok the first thing you need toe do is find a good candidate  for cups ( I like to pick horns that are straight as possible this one I drilled thru the spout )

Now you have to cut it to size and then make a mandrel for the horn to fit on lots of time you have to make a new mandrel for each cup..

After I get the mandrel made so that the horn will be able to be pressed on I heat the cut piece in my fry daddy at 350 degrees until it is flexible ..

Ok I will take the time to tell you all this right now you will see pictures of my hands without gloves on that is due to the fact I have no feelings in  my hands and they are tough as iron please do not mess with hot oil and hot horns without protection .. the only reason I do is what feeling I do have I needed to tell if I am applying enough pressure when working I do use a rag to help to keep from getting burn

Ok now after the horn is heated enough and flexible enough I press it unto the mandrel making sure its good and tight at both ends .I just press it on at first with my hand then finish getting it tight with a hammer .. then let it set for a bit wipe excess oil off then put it on the lathe

Then I turn it round then size it making the end square

after the is done I turn the outside down to a desired thickness keeping in mind that I will be taking some of on the inside of the cup also, then when I get it the thickness I want I finish the outside with lines and polish it

then I take the cup off the mandrel and put it in my chuck and clean up the inside take the edge of my Skew and smooth the inside and then polish using sandpaper and steel wool

after that a make a small chamfer( slight angle )at the base of the cup to help with pressing in the bottom

then its time to use the chime tool and cut the groove in for the bottom

be careful not to take it to deep but deep enough will take you a couple times to figure out how deep you want it

Ok this is it for part one next part will shoe you how I turn the bottom and press it in
