Counter Sunk Tang Screw
« on: April 06, 2014, 03:29:26 AM »
Trying to get a counter sunk tang screw (not the bolt through to the trigger plate) into a countersunk hole accurately has got me pulling my hair out.  The problem is in lining up my drill when pre-drilling, not the centering but getting it at the correct angle on the curved wrist.  I've been eyeballing them and sometimes I get it right but other times end up plugging the hole and re-drilling. :-[   How do you guys get this right the first time? Is there a jig or drill guide?

Screw holes can easily be bored by hand with a gimlet.  Mark Silver uses them in his traditional gun stocking video which is what put me on to them.
Start slowly and check the alignment several times as you go.  Very controllable!

Good luck,
Jeff

Dave Rase sells one.....I like mine. But some do it by hand, and some use a drill press. And yes, it's easy to mess up!

I have made screws for use with 60 and 82 degree included angles but on the VERY few guns I made,I am more inclined to counter bore the screw heads.

I'll have to second Jeff on this one.  Getting the right drilling angle on bolts and screws [patchbox] used to really give me fits.  After watching Mark Silver's technique I bought a set of 4 and can't believe what a difference it has made.  One of the cheapest and best remedies out there.

I looked them up and they really aren't that expensive.  They will go on my list of must have tools.  I have also seen some useful drill jigs at gunworks.  Are there other good sites that supply useful hard to find tooling?
