My Entry Topic - One I Built Being Fired
« on: April 22, 2014, 11:46:27 PM »
I'm new to Americanlongrifles Forum & hope this is not in the wrong section to post.   I'm not new to DIY ML rifles.  I have several I built.   Some members may remember my book The Modern Kentucky Rifle first published in 1960 and for 20 years thereafter, some 50K copies, also my Lock Stock & Barrel in two volumes.

Here is another of mine, a re-creation or restoration of a snaphaunce pistol ----
Soon after the dawn of firearms came the Snaphaunce, early 1600s. This one I found in London ca. 1960s as shown & restored it years later in 1973. It got some attention in early arms circles due its rarity & was denounced by 'experts' as being a fake or at best a reworked North African piece. Eventually it changed hands, each new owner aware of its history. The latest owner tracked it back to me, interested in details of its lineage. He has validated its being an actual weapon by firing it as his photo shows. I would mention that I purposely made its pommel knob of a contrasting material to accentuate its restoration.

I used your book as a guide for the first gun I built Roy whereon I first discovered the mysteries of inletting .Many of us had no guidance other than that brochure  when we started out and were no less proud of our first guns especially when they went off the first time .

I also have the books. I bought them mainly because they were a couple that I didn't have. Wish I had found them "Back in the day". They were part of the foundation of what we have going on today.

Glad to see you here,

Glad to have you here! We met back in the early 80's when I was making guns at Dave Decker's shop at Tannehill State Park, and was a founder of the Alabama State Muzzleloading Association. And I too still have your books in my collection. I seem to remember that you were in Mississippi at the time we met? I am a Mississippian now after a few years in North Carolina.

I hope all is well with you and yours.

Mr. Mc, I bought your book at age 14 to build my first rifle back in the mid '70s. I still have both your book with my notes scribbled in, and the rifle. I've learned a lot since then about style, but I wouldn't have even gotten started if it weren't for you. Thank you.

Mr. Mc, my copies of your books are both well "loved", ie. dog-eared from reading and rereading. Thanks and welcome.
