Making horn cups part two

OK hopefully I did not bore you with the first part .. In this part you are going to learn how to press and turn the bottom and press it into the cup or container ..
First we need to flatten a piece of horn all I do is heat it in my fry daddy till it is flexible then press it between two pieces of board in my vise






after it cools I take it out  clean it up with rubbing alcohol  to get all the oil off the I trace the bottom of the cup out and then cut it out with a coping saw and then use epoxy to glue it to a piece of round scrap wood I use 5 minute epoxy because it has a fast drying time for workability and I can pop the horn off the piece of wood with little to no mess on the horn

 


after that sets up I then take it and put it in my chuck and start turning the horn to get it even first then round I make it about 1/8" thick


After I get the piece of horn flat and round I measure the inside of the chime using an inside caliper that I modified to make sure the tips go into the chime then transfer that measurement to my outside caliper  then I just keeping turn the edge down till I get it to the right size






After I get it the right size I pop the horn off with a knife and then you should have a piece that looks like the second picture



Now after you have that done its time to press the bottom in , Make sure you have to side that you did not polish( the side that was glued to the wood) out outside of the cup make it easier to clean up ...

First I use a heat gun for this part I heat the bottom of the cup or container just hot enough to make it a little flexible then I put one side of the bottom in then press around the edge to get the rest in ...





Then here is where you need to do a quick cool of the cup or container I just pour water inside it . if you did everything right you should have a nice tight seal ..sometimes you will have to dump the water dry the cup off and pour some back in to make sure it is sealed as some does leak before it sets



Then I put it back into my chuck to clean up the bottom ..
