Berks Co Screw-Tip Horn Repair

Here was a great Berks Co Horn, missing the original finial.  The finial was broken off long ago and replaced with a steel screw eyelet.  When the finial broke off, the owner whittled the butt so the curve continued seamlessly around the end.  I removed the eyelet and matched a piece of walnut so the grain would line up.  The first attempt (pictured in the raw) shows how the transition was too big to make it seamless.  I ended up turning 2 more finials as the turning is very delicate.  The edge that meeds the plug needed to be very fine (turned out to be very brittle as well, so gentle was the word of the day).  In addition, the underside of the finial needed to be concave so it follows the curve of the plug.  Then came the aging, where I matched the stain (several layers of stain colors) and added some bumps and bruises typically found in Berks horns.
