Hemp thread question
« on: June 21, 2014, 08:22:05 PM »
Can someone give me an idea of how hemp "No. 10 shoe thread" compares to the sizing system used with linen thread from Barbours, etc?

Thanks,
Jim

no 10 shoe thread is a single ply thread used to make up multi-ply threads - I'd do a search here for a discussion of thread sizes http://www.thehcc.org/

off the top of my head IIRc it's about equivalent to the Barbour 18/3 linen, but I'd double check to make sure. Comparing thread sizes can be a real chore since material type affects sizes and they all seem to have a different system.

Two roads diverged in a wood, and I,
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.

Most suppliers will provide you with samples if you ask.

Thanks for the help guys.

I'm not trying to identify a source for help thread, but instead trying to narrow down the possible sources for thread observed on a (probably Assiniboine) artifact collected in 1851.  I was considering shoe thread as a possibility.  The thread observed is very similar to some #10 hemp shoe thread I have on hand, but I had no idea of what size of linen thread I should also be looking at for comparative purposes, or looking for in trade records to see if it was available.
