Gonna Be Busy
« on: August 11, 2014, 11:38:19 PM »
My old pal, Pathfinder, has gone out of the gun building business and gave me a call asking if I wanted any of his stuff before he listed it. I'm only about a 10 hour drive from him so we hopped in the old Ram and headed north for Port Austin, MI. Much to my surprise, all the snow has melted at his place. We had a nice bunch of ribs & macaroni salad, etc. then got down to business. I wound up buying him out. Most of the stuff is stuff I probably won't use but I bought it anyway. I think there is maybe 3 SMR rifles, 2 of which are complete, a late Lancaster (complete), a really nice Bedford gun, a LeHigh, a complete maple half stock percussion Hawken and another almost complete Hawken flint. All are pre-carves except the full stock Hawken. There are a couple breeched Octagon to Round smoothbore barrels, too, 1 is a 24ga x 42" & the other is a 20ga x 56" long. I started building the 20ga in a cherry stock. So far, it is about 71 or 72" long and may weigh in around 8 1/2 lbs when complete. It's a long way from completion though. I should have it in the white by Friday if I stay at it. I am also working on a walnut .55 cal smoothbore I plan to paint yellow or maybe blue. I've not decided on the color yet but I'm leaning toward yellow.

The cherry gun has 4" of drop at the heel. It's not out of the ordinary on some early New England & Hudson Valley guns (I'm citing the Grinslade book.) from the 2nd quarter to the third quarter of the 18th century.

The cheap camera picture does exaggerate  the appearance, too.
