Cast Brass Patchbox Lid?
« on: October 04, 2014, 11:09:41 PM »
Does anybody know of a source for cast brass lids similar to the ones used on the Moravian's rifles?

Thanks.

Allen Martin maybe; Eric Kettenburg maybe.

Recently Mark Wheland fabricated one up with heavy sheet, soldered all together, raised paneled lid. Very nice work.

Thanks for the ideas.  I'll try those folks.

I was wondering about using sheet. I'll have to experiment with that too.

This is .100 thick brass lid and finial, with brazed tube hinge. I am trying to emulate a cast box.

I don't know about emulating a cast box, but you succeeded in spades emulating Rube Goldburg with your latch mechanism.  ;D
You can interpret that last comment as I am envious. I just need to build a rifle that that type of mechanism would be proper.

Ken was probably referring to the coffin lid boxes like the horse head box used by Christian Oerter. Eric Kettenburg used this style as an example in his series on sand casting that he did for Muzzle Blasts several years ago.

Mark Wheland's was indeed a coffin-lid box. Solder seams were not apparent. He did a real nice fit-up and solder job. Almost jewelry work, when you think about it.

I wish I had images of it.

Cool lid Acer.

I was thinking of the coffin type. Was hoping there might be a "mass  produced" source (at least from our perspective) somewhere. I'm stewing on the folded, soldered idea.

This is the box that Acer is referring to. The lid is 1/4" bar and the finial is 1/8" sheet. The hinge knuckle is attached through the finial with an integral lug that is peened on the back side then silver soldered.

The inside of the lid is hollowed out to reduce weight as is the original.

That is a rivet. The pop-up spring is anchored to the body of the box. I will have to look for pics of the inside.

Great stuff Mark.  I was wondering about using some bar stock like that. I have a friend who has a machine shop and could hollow it out for me.  Cool stuff!

I am also curious about how the hinge was made and attached.

Thanks again for the pic.
