ID an ususual breechplug
« on: November 10, 2014, 07:14:28 AM »
I just bought three pistol barrels with unusual breechplugs.
Here are the pictures:

The barrels are 7/8" across the flats and 10-3/8" long to the breechplug, 11-7/8" long including the breechplug. They are .50 caliber, rifled.
The breechplug is rectangular, 15/16" high by 31/32 wide.It has a round tenon on the end, .538 in diameter by .610 long. A standard drum and nipple are threaded in to the side of the rectangular part..
Has anyone seen this type of breechplug before? What does the rest of it look like?
Thanks,
Rick W

"Bud"Garrot in Bethpage TN made up one long range muzzle loader with such an arrangement. His family may still have it but I don't know for sure.

Perhaps a pistol frame bolted to the tenon on the end.

Thanks for the responses.
Acer, I think you may be right. It does look like the tenon goes in to a frame. However, I'm not familiar with any black powder pistol that fits that description. Does anyone have any ideas?

could this be someones start of a swivel breech pistol project. The stud reminds me of the portion that fits through a plate and retained by a large screw. I have not seen its like before.
