Ferric nitrate help
« on: November 12, 2014, 04:27:22 AM »
Hey gang, I've been using the same bottle of ferric nitrate for over a year, and I don't remember the ratio to mix either alcohol or water with the crystals.
Any help???

Dane, I mix mine with water, and make it an agitated super saturated solution.  It looks like dark tea.

I mixed mine 1:5 ratio using distilled water. Like Taylor said mine looks like tea.  Depending on the wood, it produces a chocolate brown with some red highlights.

Agree.  1:5 crystals to water.

I mix mine with alcohol to a saturated solution. Works fine.

Thanks guys!

That sounds about right. I'm kinda remembering that I just filled the jar, with a little space for agitation.
I think that's pretty close to 1:5 by volume. I've done well using water in the past. I want it to penetrate as much as possible before it dries.
Thanks for the refresher!
