Painted Stock
« on: November 28, 2014, 07:56:46 PM »
There was a gun on the CLA site a few months back that had a painted stock.
Not like a solid paint job but it had like flowers or some kind of design painted on the stock.
Hard to explain but it looked as if old but wasn't.
Anyone know who this builder might be.
I wish I had saved a picture of the gun.

It might be a "Bumford" or a copy.  maybe Clay Smith...Those guns were imported into Williamsburg, VA before the RevWar....Tom

Don't think it was a copy of a Bumford.  The painting looked like it was under a finished coat of some type.
There were different colors to the flowers and designs but look faded.
Maybe someone will remember the gun I am trying to explain.
I sent Clay Smith an email asking if he knew the gun or maker.

I've seen some painted stocks done by Eric Kettenburg.  Perhaps that is what you are referring to.
Beautiful folk art . I would love to own the couple I've seen.

That might be who made the gun I am referring to.  If he is a member of this site maybe he will chime in.

There is a member by the name of "Keb" that does painted Type "G" Trade Guns. He shows a couple on here, go to page 2 and look for "Painted Stock".

That is not the type of painting I am looking for.
The folk art painting is I am pretty sure what was on the gun I saw for sale on the CLA site a while back.
I have a friend who wish he had bought the gun.  Just hopping to find the maker or the gun if it might be for sale again.

Kermit those are some pretty stocks.
The stock we are looking for is the folk art design on them.  I think it is narrowed down to the one Erick Kettenburg did.
The gun was listed on the CLA site for sale but we didn't get the person's name who sold it and we don't know who the buyer was.

Thanks.  I did and found the painted barn gun we been looking for.  Thats all I been doing for last few hrs is tracking this type of gun with the folk art painting.  I am sure it is Erick who painted the gun that was for sale on CLA site.

Kermit those are some nice painted guns on the links you gave. Thanks for them.

Bob, I've never figured out how to search the CLA site. But the Contemporary Makers site kicks this up under "Eric Kettenburg folk art" as the search.

What has Eric Kettenburg been up to lately? Haven't seen anything from his hand in a while. Love his "antiques" and the way he ages his work.

here's the Blog link to Erik's paint: http://contemporarymakers.blogspot.com/2008/04/eric-kettenburg-historical-folk-art.html, which looks much like the "painted barn gun" ALR link above.

This unique longrifle was at the 2014 CLA show and now resides in Denmark/Norway/Sweden (one of them, anyway).  He was over at Don Getz's table, for a while and  one very happy guy.

Not sure if it's actually painted or if it's a 'staining' process.

Say, any of you boys smithies? Or, if not smithies per se, were you otherwise trained in the metallurgic arts before straitened circumstances forced you into a life of aimless wanderin'?

Hello,
The Kettenburg rifle ended up in Norway and I am the proud owner.
It really got my attention when I first saw the pictures 10-15 years ago, and I did not need to think hard about it when it was up for sale.
Eric Kettenburg is truly one of the most interesting builders out there,
and I am glad I got my hands on this one.

You have a one of a kind that is a very unique rifle.  I would love to have it hanging on my wall.
That painting is awesome on the rifle.

I'm in the middle of a painted gun project. This one will have been painted 120 years after it's original build. Saying this, I have made the gun, aged it, am using it, and will pass it along to an artist friend to paint. My wife and I have worked up a story of its origin, life as a weapon and transformation into a piece of art. I made the gun around an original iron guard that a buddy found in a junk box at an auction. We will in no way try to pass this off as an original (old piece). It's just another way to express ones self artistically and have some fun doing it.  I'll post pictures when she's finished!!
