A couple of new outfits for the upcoming hunting seasons
« on: September 10, 2011, 11:16:22 PM »
Is everybody ready for some hunting? Whether for squirrels or something bigger these should fit the bill.
To whet your appetites here are two rigs just completed looking forward to the hunting seasons, especially the wascally tree rats . To start with is my rendition of a typical hunting outfit from the Southern Appalchian mountain region. My inspiration came from Jim Webb's book, "Sketches of Hunting Pouches, Powder Horns and Accouterments of Southern Appalachia".   First the bag, it's only about 7 1/2" wide and 5" high with a 1" strap with forged buckle AND belt keeper.   A leather button can be added for keeping the flap shut as this is a single bag pouch with no inside pockets, just like the original.
The powder horn, again similar to one shown in Webb's book, is about 10 1/2 long, has a walnut base plug, cherry stopper and, not wasting any material, an aged brass thimble applied to the tip. Also, staying in character, included is two aged, simple antler powder measures.  One is 35 grains, and for larger game the second one is 50 grains and both are attached to one whang that is merely wrapped around the strap attachment area.  The powder horn strap is a walnut dyed strip of ticking that completes the outfit.  Essential, simple and reflective of the people that inhabited our Appalachian area.  Hope I came close.

This second outfit is what I call my Tenn. style pouch and powder horn. A bit more refined than the previous rig, it will certainly be suitable regardless of what game you're after. The bag also has forged buckles and belt keepers, is about 7" wide and 6" high. It has a small pocket sewn inside to the back (about 2" square) to keep a couple balls or extra flint. Attached to the strap hangs two measures made of horn. One is about 38 grains and the larger one at 68 grains and are marked as such. They hang from one whang and is attached to the brass ring on the strap. The powder horn has an applied collar below the cherry turned base plug and also has an antler tip applied with a walnut stopper. It's about 11 1/2 inches long and has it's own leather strap.   Of course,  small packets of beeswax are included for 'fine tuning' the measures.  Enjoy.

Really nice work Gary, I like to see horns and bags together as a set. By themselves they can look pretty ordinary but these two look really good together.  I guess they should since you made them as sets :) Keep ‘em comm’n, always like seeing your work.

Good morning Gary; Sir, Very nice work, both bags. However I'm sold on the second styling and the horn really works for me. Have a great week end. Thanks for sharing. AJ.

Gary,
I am a fan!
I would prefer to see plaited hemp or something similar for attachment in lieu of the latigo lace. Your work is so sharp that I think the store-bought look of the lace detracts just a bit from the overall set.
That is how picky I have to get in order to have something to say other than, "Great job!"

Get your stuff ready for your Journeyman's test!

Very nice Gary, as usual. I too like the whole sets made up (bag, horn and accouterments) and these are  real nice southern examples. I have a .32 and .40 southern style rifles and need to get busy ion a squirrel hunt bag for the .32 and a general hunting bag for the .40  You have inspired me again.

Thanks for all the kind words fellas.  I totally forgot I still had this topic out there and after all this time it still gets some attention.   The pouch in the second set is one of my favorite styles thanks to TC Albert's book.  I've even learned to adjust the size depending needs and wants.
Rick, yes the laces uses on the second set is totally tacky to say the least.  I now use other materials to tie things depending on the final look.   And yes, I will have my 5 items in time (and not misplaced again, lol) for the annual  meeting.

I  hope all had a great and safe Thanksgiving!

Yep I can personally vouch for the quality and workmanship, I bought the second one. The horn carries my powder and the pouch carries my wading and spare flints when I'm out in the woods over here in England. They are both much admired by my hunting companions.

I like the second bag and the first horn myself.

I'm with James. The first horn almost yells for my attention, and I like the rounded looks of the second bag. The fewer corners a bag has, the fewer places for little things to hide in.
