Ramrod hole run out
« on: December 18, 2014, 04:37:15 AM »
Just received an expensive long rifle stock.  The ram rod rod hole in the breech area is off to left side of the stock about 1/4".

I drilled a little hole, centered in the bottom flat of the barrel channel.  I inserted the rod.  I drilled straight down in to the rod through the same centered hole, with the same bit.  The hole in the rod just barely clipped the edge of the rod.  This shows the ram rod hole ran  off to the side to me.

I guess run off to the non lock side is preferable to running off to the slock side.

At what point should this concern me?

Thanks,

Looks to me like you are okay. Don't tell anyone and they'll never know, it being slightly off to the side plate side should make no difference. Nice wood!

dave

btw, "run out" to my knowledge means the hole actually broke the surface somewhere.

That's actually a good thing. Keeps you from breaking into the ramrod hole while inletting the lock.

Some of the best original European guns were made that way intentionally. the photo is a Boutet of France pistol.  He was the gun maker to Napoleon.

I try to accomplish this when I drill a ram rod. This keeps the mainspring from breaking into the ram rod channel. So from my point of view its a good thing.

The deviation from the center line toward the side plate will  allow for a longer ramrod. It helps when cleaning to have an extra inch or so if the rod gets bound up. The extra length will let you use one of the rod puller sets to extract it. It is a good thing.

Don't sweat it at all, as the others are saying it is a good thing.  I intentionally do this with pistols I make exactly as in the photo Jerry posted.  The only time it would be a problem is if there is also run-out towards the triggerguard, which could make the wood awfully thin when you go to shape the lower forestock.

Fred Miller used to do this on purpose for me.

If the lock has a wide mainspring offsetting the hole will prevent breaking into the rod hole when inletting the lock.
I have done this on purpose for this very reason.

i use a router to cut my r/r groove and i always ran my r/r groove directly under the barrel. is it better too run a little to the offside?
