Early Moravian Build

I finished this up for a customer right before Christmas. She's built around a 46" Oct/Round .50 caliber Ed Rayl barrel, modified left handed Siler/Chambers lock, Davis double set triggers, and Dunlap premium curly maple stick. I used a honey maple understain, then AF and heat, finished off with 6 coats of hand rubbed Teak oil.

Nicely done! I never would have thought you could use any other stain before AF. I'm guessing the understain you used was alcohol based? I really like the effect. BJH

I used LMF Honey Maple before I applied the AF and heat. Lots of scrubbing with 0000 steel wool and a scotch bright pad will bring out the yellow where you want it to come through.

There's a lot to like there.  Would love to see it in person.  I think you put your own personality into this one and it looks pretty believable from here.  It reminds me architecturally of the muscular but racy style of RCA 42 by whomever and RCA 83 by Isaac Berlin.

Rich, I didn't try to copy any one given piece but took the attributes of a few different pieces and interjected a little of my own style. The customer wanted a Moravian but a Moravian unlike anything that's out there. I think I got him what he wanted.

The customer did, and a fine looking gun in the bargain! That barrel just keeps going and going... which I like a lot. I too would love to handle that shooting iron. As we say in the southland:

Ya done good!

Beautiful."...I have a Moravain sitting next to be built....that barrel is neat. Thank you for sharing the stain technique.....I will use aging on my build also.....54cal c weight, stock is DAVE keck profiled and barrel and RR is done.....so all I have to do is the easy parts!😊
