What size veiner, v-gouge, #11 gouge
« on: February 27, 2015, 11:44:03 PM »
Mine is getting short and thick, hard to sharpen.  It is about a 5mm size.  I see Track has them in 3, 5 and 7mm.  For stock carving what one should I get.  I would think that the little ones might work better but are harder to sharpen.  Any words of wisdom?

I bought a 1mm V gouge first, but found it to be too fragile.  Then I bought a 3mm, which holds an edge much longer and is less fragile.  The answer to your question really depends on what you want to do with it.  I like the 3mm for outlines and incised work.  Much bigger will be difficult to use for incised carving.
