Curly Ash Horn

Here are a couple of pic's of a horn I finished up this week.  It is based on an original (last picture is the original horn and bag) I handled in a private collection last August.  The hollow out curly ash base plug is held to the horn with 1/4" brass tacks.  The stopper was also carved from curly ash.  The scraped horn was colored using Rit dye and then darkened with True oil and lamp black.  The curly ash base plug was stained with homemade aqua fortis.

Wow Dave, that is one peach of a powder horn! The curly ash really gives it class! I hope to one day find a nice piece of curly ash to build a rifle with. The picture of your horn and hunting bag together look like the original deal to me. Very good work!

Nice work Dave, Good eye. the over all color and finish is great. I really like the shape of the base.
Do you know where the original was found?

Nice, Taylor. I'm hoping folks in Emerald Ash Borer country are mining the dying trees for wood such as this. 'Twould be a shame if it all went to firewood.
