I probably just need to wait for that "Ah-ha" moment to happen, but I'm not seeing the advantage to threading the outside of the barrel, and making a "cap" to match that will screw on over the outside of the barrel.

Doesn't the distance from the outer barrel flat to the bore or chamber wall remain the same either way?  ???

AH-HA!  I think I get it.  With a "female" cap, the flash channel will be the distance from outer barrel flat to the bore, but with a traditional plug that is counter-bored you have the additional thickness of the internal beechplug wall to go thru to reach the counter-bore (since it is smaller than the bore).

 Seems like a LOT of work, for a little gain.
