I use Pumice stone and then Rotten stone. I dip a soft cotton rag in either Mineral oil or Linseed oil then dip it in one of the stone powders and rub it in a circular motion. It takes the shine away and leave a mellow sheen. My opinion is to make sure you have developed several coats of the finish and don't over do the rubbing so you still leave a protective water resistant covering of the Permalyn. I think it is the best protector for your stock with Chambers "oil" a close second. Several here have other opinions. Good luck, Bob

I make up a paste of rotten stone and mineral oil.  Consistency a little softer than toothpaste.  Put some on a felt block and rub on the shiny finish.  Tones it down beautifully.

Use a toothbrush with oil and rottenstone around your carving too and you should be good to go.

I realize this is an older post but how along after the last coat of Permalyn should you wait before rubbing the finish down? The finish came out good but just too glossy for me.

Birchwood Casey rubbing compound works well for me. Don't over do it.

Wait until the Permalyn is completely dry. If you begin rubbing while it is even a little soft you'll have a mess on your hands. Do not rub hard, do continue to incorporate new areas as you go, a light touch will do. Wipe off the rotten stone/mineral oil with a soft rag, if it needs another treatment go for it.

24hrs, 48 hrs be OK you think? Or should I wait longer just to be  sure?

Thank you, Longone
