.32 X 38" velocities
« on: March 28, 2015, 01:54:50 AM »
I was just going through a stack of old targets and data and came across a sheet with loads and velocities written down for my 38", .32 squirrel rifle,  2 years ago.

My day at the range was testing accuracy loads with both Shenendoah lube vs. spit.

35gr. of GOEX 3F, with .311" ball and spit lubed .0235" RR ticking = 1,856fps - accuracy load.

40gr. of GOEX 3F, with .311" ball and Shenendoah lubed .0235" RR ticking = 1,936fps - accuracy load.

35gr. of GOEX 3F, with .311" ball and Shenendoah lubed .0235" RR ticking - 1,901fps - almost double group size - 1 1/2" to 1 7/8".

My next testing when the weather co-operates will be with mink oil, neetsfoot oil, my last btl of LHV (my tks to Brian) and George S. lube VS WWWF+NFOil

Daryl,
Was the bottom load 35 gr or did you mean 45 gr? I have seen similiar test where 5 more grains caused a decrease in velocity but it looks weird that just changing from spit lube to Shenendoah would cause those accuracy and loss of velocity problems.

Yes - 50 yards and yes - 35gr. with Shenedoah in the last load.Note that 35gr. with Shenedoah lube gave 50fps higher speed than 35gr. with spit produced.

I will note here and now, that every load I have tried in this barrel, when shot at 25 yards rested on a sand bag, rear bag or not, produced a hole barely over .45 calibre for 5 shots, maybe 50 cal. at worse.

It mattered not whether I was using 20gr. or 40gr. with spit, grease or oil - ANY load seems to shoot accurately at 25 yards.

It's when the range stretches out a bit, that the REAL accuracy - or inaccuracy starts to show. Further out is better yet, like, 60, 75 or 100yards, but not really necessary for rat rifles.

So far, only my .69 has showed no change in accuracy nor enough to matter in speed, when switching to a slippery lube - GREAT for a hunting rifle.

Everything I own, from .32 to .58 changes accuracy and poi when switching to a slippery lube from a water based lube - some, more than others.
