I got #8 a little while ago and over the past 3 days Ive just been taking my time on it. Its actually a walnut stock which is pretty much impossible to find on a CVA Hawken as I believe they were very limited. One of those, we got some walnut, make what you can and switch over to beechwood once you run out, kinda deals. Beautiful wood grain but a SOB to fill the grain.
Its a 54cal with slow twist 28" barrel. I got everything all bedded for heavy recoil. I am browning the barrel now, along with the sight, gotta order a new rear sight and tomorrow, start the painful task of polishing the brass :bash:
Will have to do a little hammer work as it strikes to far back on the nipple. Functions perfectly fine, just bugs me as it looks awkward.
I actually didnt have to stain it. I tested with boiled linseed oil first and it turned it a nice honey/oak color. I am a fan of darker stocks, so I did one coat of LMF nut brown and then one coat of dixie gun works stain. Truoil finish and then buffed carefuly back with heavily oiled 0000 steel wool.
