Nice chunk of maple
« on: May 12, 2015, 01:51:22 PM »
Just thought I would post a couple pictures of one I just finished. It is one heck of a piece of maple. The pictures don't really do it justice.

Very distinct quilting/flame going on there.  I like the color also.  What lock you got on there?

Quilted maple is certainly eye-catching when it's stained. Well done.

Spectacular.  Flamboyant.  Loud, even.  And a nice build to boot.  Tell us about the stock...plank, precarve?  Component parts?

Gorgeous indeed!  I wouldn't be able to have a stock like that on a hunting rifle.  I'd be so occupied just staring at it and admiring it that I'd never see any game  :D.  Did you use Aqua Fortis as the stain?

I didn't know maple could look like that. I'm just learning.  Does figure like this weaken the wood?  Is that an issue?

It's gorgeous!  Thanks for sharing.

There is an interesting story behind this gun. It was actually started by Leonard Meadows (for those of you who don't know about him, do a search for him on the contemporary collecting forum). Unfortunately, Leonard died before he could finish it. So, 40 years later the owner brings it to me and asks me to finish it for him. Needless to say I was more than happy to oblige.

As far as the components, I have no idea who made them. There are no markings of any kind on any of them. The owner said that Leonard supplied them.

The stain is my own concoction. It's equal parts of Behlen's American Walnut, Medium Mahogany and Wheat mixed together. The finish is Chambers oil rubbed down with rottenstone and then a coating of Renaissance wax.

Was the wood hard like sugar maple? If not, what wood would you copare it with?

Best regards

Rolf,

The wood is just as hard as sugar maple. I wish I had a truckload of it. I was lucky enough to get a small piece that the owner kept. It's big enough for a pistol.
