Hi, I'm about 3 hrs into my 1st barrel browning job,Wakon bay tru brown. I degreased twice. with denatured alcohol. I got it hanging over the bath tub with hot water in the tub. ( wife works afrernoons so I'm good till 11:00) Any how the
barrel looks a mess. streeks all over, and some spots almost no color. Is this the usual? I hope it will even out after another coat or two.
Now my real queston should I card it off before I put the next coat on tomorrow.
do I have to degrease again?
Thanks,Ken

You don't need to degrease, but use rubber gloves to handle it, as you don't want body oil to hit it. Just card lightly the first couple coats.  I like a piece of old blue Jean, or coarse canvas.  The first two or three coats look terrible, especially  for the first time Browner.  Hang in there.  It evens out the more coats you use.

Hi Kenny see you sunday 60 degrees hooda!!

Sure the first couple coats look hellish but thats normal.  Card off easy or heavy depending on how coarse/pitted you want it.  I leave mine go til they pit = less glare when we shoot in the sun....!

I put the 2nd coat on this morning.looks much better than the 1st. The only thing is the back of the tang is still shiny.no rust, just discolored metal.
will this take after a few more coats? if not what must I do?
I plan on carding it off again this afternoon. and doing another coat.
btw I have it hanging from the tang hole . is this proper?
Thanks,Ken
Roger I'll be there , I'll bring the chunk gun with , if I get to shoot it tomorrow.
I cant find the shaders for it so gonna have to make a new set.

I usually have good luck with small spots by degreasing again during the browning process using alcohol and cotton balls.  I have had problems occasionally with the junction with the tang and the barrel when I did not degrease the threads well enough.

Apply the solution with steel wool.  Rub it around some to even out the wetness.  The steel wool kinda' works it into the metal, enhancing the rust.

Degrease the steel wool...  lot's of times it's got oil on it to keep it from rusting.  Not what you want.

I just put on the 4th coat , I dont know if i'm doing this right or not. But it's starting to look like a 200 year old gun.
I'm putting the browning solution in with swabs ,big ones 3/4" on a wire handle.
after the 2nd coat it was really bad so I card it real heavy took most of it off.
3rd coat looked good.but looked pitted hard. I carded it with denim. I just put the 4th coat on. I'm gonna have to wait till morning to see the outcome.
If its not smooth I dont know what to do but put more on.
boy this gun was a true learning experience.
Building a modern gun is much easier, but not as satisfying.

Instead of that using that big dauber, you might want to try just wiping on with a clean cotton cloth, one pass, notrunning or dripping off the barrel.  Also, the shorter you go between wipe and carding, the less deeply the pits become.  If you want a pitted antique look continue with your process, but if you want a gun that has a nice even coat of brown, watch the rust develop and card it before it digs in too deep.  And if you don't like where it has gone so far, just sand it back to bare metal and start over. (probably wouldn't try to remove all the pits though.)  It really shouldn't seem hard at all.
