Rust blued a barrel
« on: August 17, 2015, 11:54:09 PM »
I just finished rust bluing a barrel for my present build. I showed you the lock in a previous topic (I think if not I'll add it here).

Very cool.

Oh, and you owe us each $10 to keep us quiet, or we'll tell your wife you were doing this in the kitchen.    ;)
If it was easy, everyone would do it.

That looks great. I would like to be able to rust blue. Is there any way you could do a tutorial on the steps as you seem to have it down pat? Thanks Dan

There is a YouTube video by Larry Potterfield of Midway USA that shows the process but if you want my version I can write something down. The Mark Lee Express blue comes out more black for me (I use tap water) and I don't boil it as long as he does but I apply the solution more often and don't wait long between coats before going back into the boiling water. Let me know if you want my version using the Mark Lee Express Blue.

I think we may have discovered at least one reason for that.   ;D   Seriously,  I wouldn't do that in my kitchen, and I am single.  I have a hot plate in the shop for such things.

We all have our ways of doing things --- it's boiling water but thanks for thinking of me. I was married for 39 years before she left me for a younger guy and I don't find that funny!

I seldom see any intent to offend here, this post included. If anything, we tend to fool around, and this can bite us, because we cannot see the expression on the other person'so face, or read their body language.

Great forum.

I know you did not mean anything by your statement you did not know my situation but it is a sore subject with me - so forgive me if I over reacted -- your forgiven :) Now we can "kiss & make-up" ;D

We all use what's available for barrel finishing, stove is fine. Good bluing job too! I don't do the "rust a little then boil" thing, I go ahead and apply the rusting solution multiple times, carding in between sessions, until I get the coating I want, then card and boil just once.

Nice blue job -- I'll have to give it a try next time. I just ordered a fine wire carding wire wheel which might help with your method.
