Pocket Fire Striker Kit
« on: August 08, 2015, 08:50:28 PM »

Haven't made of of these in a long time, but needed a new one. The leather pouch is 3" x 2 3/4" of 4oz carving leather, stained with light brown Tandy oil dye, and sewn with linen thread. The file decorated striker is 1095 steel, secured with a 3/32" steel rod, and peened on the ends. Inside is a small tinder tube unit and a large musket flint. Period correct for 19th c. and maybe 18th c. Hope you enjoy a look.

Very cool Wick. What tool did you use to carve the scrolls into the leather?

Eric, I first made a shallow cut with an Exacto knife, then used a burnisher I made by using a standard size harness needle stuck in a piece of dowel. I ground off some of the point, then rounded the tip and polished it. I lightly wet the leather with rubbing alcohol, let half dry, then chased the knife cut with the burnisher. In the past I used a free hand type of stitching groover, but it never worked as well as I thought it should for doing that.

Perfect, Wick. That's an essential piece of gear.
