Cute little lock I got at the CLA Show
« on: August 21, 2015, 04:59:41 AM »
Made by the Rice Brothers back in the late 1980's.  The action is, as L.C. would say, "slicker than dam it".

As Bob Roller would say, "Show us the inside, that's where the lock is!"

Look where the fly is located.

Nope, it's not for sale.

I really liked the nice double sett triggers he had with those locks. Really neat snd crisp. Just didn't go with the style of rifles I normally build.

I think I saw several of these for sale at Friendship this past June at the Rice barrel booth.
The fly is like one I saw in the locks of a cased pair of percussion target pistols of French make
that I owned years ago.

Ron a word of caution when using that lock. The  bolster is short and you can run in to trouble if you're not really careful about the lock bolt placement.  Tim

I heard that either L.C. or his brother is building locks similar to W.C. Cain's wonderful flinters.  Does anyone know if that's true?

Tom: No.

Tim,
Thanks.  I really hadn't noticed that until I looked at my own picture above.  Not much wiggle room, for sure.

Acorn20,
I bought this lock from LC's brother and he told me he isn't making any more locks.  He said he didn't know he had any of these left and happened to find 6 and brought them to the CLA.  He sold them all.

Acorn L.C. assembles locks  for Jim Chambers. I  have used Walt Cain's locks in the past and I can assure you a lock assembled by L.C. will be of the same quality.

Yeah, a very nice little lock!
Seems to me that you could add a little mild steel to extend the bolster if you want. A little brazing with a fine tip on a MAPP gas torch would do the trick.
Here's a photo of your lock as compared to a Beckwith, London, ca 1810. The arcs I drew in show the approximate swing of the tumbler arms. The back end of the Beckwith bolster has been filed so as to give the maximum amount of room for the lock bolt. The bolster on yours is a bit shorter than need be on the bottom side.

You might also want to deepen the pan a bit.
Anyway, I'm just chatting here...

Here's another view of the Beckwith, without my distracting lines...

Thanks Whetrock,

The Beckwith is an interesting lock.  The tumbler is shaped to allow a bridle screw inside the lower arc of the tumbler.  Ingenious!

Yeah, that Beckwith is about as cool a lock as I have ever seen. We had some discussion about it back in 2013. The post is worth a revisit, I think. It also includes some other photos. Some of the photos that Feltwad posted showed the bolster of a lock that is helpful for comparison, in regard to the bolster, etc., as we are discussing at the moment.
