Hudson Valey fowler barrels
« on: September 23, 2015, 11:21:28 PM »
Hello,

Would anybody who has made a Hudson Valley Fowler being willing to share some dimensions on their barrels. I was told they tend to taper from the breech quickly. I have a breech dimension and overall length from pictures but no dimensions of tapers or flaring. Any measurements would be very helpful. Thanks,

A barrel maker can make one for you. For example, Ed Rayle can turn one in the correct bore and profile.
You don't need dimensions, just ask for a HVF style bbl. in the bore you wish.

Thanks for the replies. I guess I wanted some measurements from others here so that I can better visualize what I'm going to build. I've spoken to a couple of makers, and they do have a pattern. I just wanted to see if anyone had measurements from an original that they used as a pattern. Thanks again,

I would contact Ed Rayl. He has taken patterns off of lots of original barrels to replicate and he probably has done so for the style you are building. I would bet he has original barrel dimensions for HVF in his stock of patterns.

Depends on what caliber. If around 11 bore or so I like to go 1 1/4 to 1 3/8 at the breech. A fairly rapid taper in the first 9" to 12" is good. Keep it thin at the muzzle. You can go round or oct/round. Original barrels vary widely in measurements. Many if not most were of euro origin.
My gun with the 11 bore 6 foot barrel weighs only 11 3/4 lbs. Many originals weighed up to 20 Lbs with a 5 foot barrel. Really depends on your preference and intended use. For me, more weight means less recoil. These guns were used to shoot flocks sitting on the water. Being handy light and whippy wasn't an issue back in the day.
