OK,this is what I'm thinking. While I'm still not sure about doing it I was thinking about incorporating one into the patchbox. After posting about patchboxes here on Hawken rifles and doing some of my own research it sure looks like they used Tryon supplied boxes like the one on the Medina rifle. This type or similar boxs can be found on at least three hawken rifles to my knowledge. Trying to a build a J&S hawken, mid 1830's so this box could be period correct. These boxes are used by others builders at the time also and it seems they all took a little creative licence and personalized them to a degree with slots, straight or not,key holes ect.So instead of the keyhole why not a hunters star?and maybe doing something different with the slots, trying to put a little distance between this box and the Medina.Mark the bad juju would be putting something where its not supposed to be and creating bad luck, thinking how superstition played into these rifles with luck pieces inlayed on many rifles back then. Not that I buy into this but sure would hate to put the hunters star on the wrong side and critters your after all start coming in on the back side making the shot more difficult,LOL
