Lehigh Belly Transition
« on: March 13, 2009, 03:50:33 AM »
In some pix of original Lehigh rifles there appears to be a slight, gradual upward step from the area in front of
the trigger guard extension to the lower forestock, usually located a little to the rear of the leading edge of the lock
and side panels. Am I seeing things ?

Thanks
Paul

ptk,

There is a quite often a double radius, on the bottom of the buttstock, transitioning at the rear of the trigger guard to just below the lock panels.
I'm not sure if this is what you're talking about or not.

There are basically two or even three ways to 'dish' a Lehigh.  Moll rifles almost (I say 'almost' to cover my a** - really I mean 'always'...) always began an upward dish at the forward portion of the guard; in other words, every Moll rifle I have seen has the entire guard mounted into a concave curve beginning at the forward point of the guard finial and ending where the rear tab meets the stock at the rear of the grip rail.  Rupp type rifles - Herman I would point to specifically but Peter Neihart also - began this concave dish at the forward portion of the guard bow - the front finial in other words is fairly level with the forestock, then under the bow the dishing begins.  Neihart seems to have sometimes carried the level lower forestock line back through most of the bow area even, but then had a more abrupt curve under the grip rail terminating where the rear tab met the stock.  It's all splitting hairs really, but it can radically alter the appearance depending upon how it is accomplished.

Dane & Eric - Thanks for the replies. My current project has a step in the wrist as you describe which I could use more info on.
However, my current question is about the area forward of the front TG extension to the lower forestock. The enclosed picture
is from a Nathan Clause rifle.

Thanks
Paul
