P. Angstadt hawk

Pictured below is a copy of a P. Angstadt hawk that I completed a few months ago.  The head was a forged hammer poll head which was purchased at Ft. Frederick.  I cut most of the hammer poll off, filed the head smooth, turned the bowl, drilled and threaded it to fit the hawk head.  Then many hours were spent filing the diamonds, a process that can infinitely increase your vocabulary.  The hawk head was then engraved in keeping with the original.  The haft was made from curly maple and inlayed with silver using the same figures as the original.   The haft is drilled and fitted with an antler mouthpiece and a clean out plug; both are threaded into the smoke holes.   The original is believed to be circa 1810.

anyone who would own this piece will for sure be " Lucky" just a real work of Art. Ole Angstat would be proud- Pinyone

That is a fine hawk.  I've not branched into making them.  This is more reason not to! ;)

I get a headach just looking at the facets on the bowl.  Great looking hawk.  You definately captured the flavor of the original. 
Lucky, do you rmember who you purchased the forged head from.  I just had a request today for a hammer poll hawk.

Just beautiful, that is as nice of replication of an original that I have ever seen..I enjoy doing one ever so often but yours is way beyound my ability..a sure beauty!

Dave, unfortunately, I do not know who made the head.  I was just looking for a head that had the right design and the double flare to the blade.  It was quite a task to file the head out smooth. I had an old Heller double cut file that did a wonderful job on it.  Wish I could find that brand of file again.   The diamonds take some careful lay out before you start filing and then you work up to the lay out lines very carefully.   The hawk and some others are on my web site www.Recreatinghistory.com.   Thanks to all for the compliments, they mean a lot from this board...

Ron,  Went to Ft. Frederick last year for the first time.  I was overwhelmed.  The flyer posted over 130 vendors so I completely understand not knowing where you buy stuff from sometimes.  Ft. Frederick will definitely be on my list of things to do again.
