What is the "best value for the money" chisel sharpening guide?
« on: October 16, 2015, 08:37:40 PM »
The good news is that I have scrounged up a few good quality flat wood chisels.   Bad news is that they show the usual abuse:  small nicks, wrong bevels, crooked angles, etc.  Good news is I have a nice set of quality sharpening stones, and I think all the chisels can be brought back to serviceable condition.

My problem is finding a good sharpening guide.  Something to hold the chisels at the proper angle while I work them over the stones.  I have been looking at the Veritas system, but I would like to know the opinions of those with more experience than I.

I just do it by eye.  You don't have to be exact.  You might have to start on a grinding wheel to get the correct bevel, and then work on the stones.

When I taught Cabinet/Wood Working Shop, I used a Book written by Patrick Spielman ,Sharpening Basics, ISBN 0-8069-7226-2,, $9.95
Covers most all tools and easy to understand, honing jigs, fixtures and inexpensive and easy to build....

I do it by eye, about 25 degrees.    Actually just clearing my folded fingers is about right when held by the blade close to the stone.   I rough shape on a belt sander and finish on diamond stones.   Remember to put a micro bevel on the edge by just raising the blade as slightly as you can.

I have a Veritas MK II Honing Guide and use it to repair badly beat up FLAT chisles. Once the chisle is repaired I do the touch-up by eye while I am working. If you go to "The Woodright Shop Episodes on the web  <http://video.wpt.org/program/woodwrights-shop/episodes/> he has some episodes on how to sharpen chisles & gouges - good info.
