Antique adjustable rifler from Shreckengost gun shop
« on: November 16, 2015, 11:26:45 PM »
A friend who I've come to know through my research on the Shreckengost gunsmiths shared this rifler
that he acquired from Lloyd Norris who had purchased items from the Shreckengost gun shop.  I thought
I would share it because it's a nice little piece of engineering for it's time.  The caliber is 54.  The rifler is
adjustable by running the screws in and out.  Rather than add pieces of paper behind the cutter which could
get dislodged, they could for instance put a quarter turn on the screws and adjust it in this manner.

Rightful liberty is unobstructed action according to our will within limits drawn around us by the equal rights of others. I do not add 'within the limits of the law' because law is often but the tyrant's will, and always so when it violates the rights of the individual.

I have done a few using the papers in the tool slot and I had no problems. That one would make me wonder about the screws self adjusting out of my control, but I dunno, never used one like it.

Never seen one like it, but as someone who has recut barrels and fussed with paper shims, I think that this is clever as can be.

Now why didn't I think of that? Makes perfect sense to me. Seems like it must be more precise and secure than a piece of paper or other such shim. Do you have any more info?

Maybe I'm missing something but how do you keep the adjustment screws from backing out a few thousandths when drawing it through the bore, there is always vibration in the removal of metal. with paper its simple and precise, no fiddling with making sure you screwed the adjuster in too much, too little. I can only go by what I see.
