Edward Marshall Rifle
« on: November 19, 2015, 12:18:29 AM »

This is my take on the Marshall rifle, not an exact copy. It has a 54 caliber, c weight, Early transitional style Rice barrel. The lock was made by Danny Caywood. Reeves Goering brass mounts, with a sterling silver overlay on the triggerguard.  The curly maple stock has been relief carved. I modified the Davis double set triggers, and made the patchbox, ramrod pipes, ramrod tip, sideplate, and barrel lugs. Time to shoot!!

Say, any of you boys smithies? Or, if not smithies per se, were you otherwise trained in the metallurgic arts before straitened circumstances forced you into a life of aimless wanderin'?

I had an old guy tell me that there were two kinds of people in this world, right handed people and those that wished they were right handed.   ;D

Thanks all! The buttplate was made  by Reeves Goering and I believe it is their Christian Springs casting

I'm left handed, and right eye'd - so I shoot from my right shoulder.  But I hold a pistol in my left, and lay my head over to use my right eye...looks a little strange.

Congrats on a nice build.

Thanks again. The stain I used was Homer Danglers dark brown/walnut. I often use aquafortis first but didn't this time. I give the stock about 3 coats buffing in between with steel wool or a fine 3m pad. Then comes about 6 coats of refined linseed oil, and after it has all dried I burnish some more and apply Ray's Gun Wax.
The tartan is the MacCrea tartan-one of about 6 different colors/patterns available. I really like the weathered colors of one that has browns where this has blue, but with tartan prices at about $110 a yard I think I will stick with this plaid

I like that you made a lot of the parts and really thought out the build.  The architecture captures the original well.

Sounds like our 14 year old grandson,Zack. He is left eye dominant but shoots right handed.

This looks to be an excellent gun, but I'm having trouble getting beyond the plaid. A neutral background while boring, doesn't compete with the artwork.
