Leman Half-Stock Rifle
« on: December 29, 2015, 02:39:43 AM »
I am in the process of collecting parts for a 45 caliber 7/8 barrel Leman half-stock rifle.  As for the  nose cap have I narrowed my choice down to a brass grooved muzzle cap (I will have to shorten it) and a steel Plains Rifle forend cap.  Which one of these is the most correct for this gun or is there some other choice.

How about cast pewter? Or more realistically, cast lead-tin solder, if bars of that nasty evil alloy are still available? Betcha that's what ol' Henry L. used.

Although a little more expensive,
Pure tin is my preference for cast nose caps

poured pewter would be more correct, if you care about that
only flintlocks remain interesting..

The one time I tried to pour a nose cap using 50/50 tin I made a heckuva mess,....I guess I just don't have the technique down right. ???  I'd be inclined to go with the commonly available cast nose cap.

Pour it again

There must be tutorials here on how to do it, involving some strong wrapping paper
Use that around the stock to make a dam   One needs also something to fill the RR hole   Then finish file to shape

Seems to me I must have read a how-to from the NMRA back in the '60's.  Did it once, turned out OK (well, by my standards at the time)

poured cap. Pure tin. Rub the area under the cap with a carpenters pencil before you pour the metal. Heat the barrel so the tin doesn't freeze on you. It ain't rocket surgery.
