Jacob Fisher?
« on: April 08, 2014, 05:58:51 PM »
I picked this rifle up the other day here in VA. Signed Jacob Fisher. Looks Ohio-ish to me but not familiar with a lot of Ohio rifles.  I know there was a Fisher family of gunsmiths in the Lynchburg VA area but this one doesn't look like them.  Hopefully someone can chime in on this one.

Lots of Fishers but no Jacob in the "Ohio Books". If he was here he didn't make the books. Sorry, Jack

Maybe Avirc will come on board and give his take on this. There were Fishers in WVA, but not sure that they are the ones you are looking for. Good Luck with the search. Come to think of it, James Whisker did a compilation of WVA makers. Book has a dark blue cover, as I recall. If you can get to see a copy of that, you might find what you are looking for.

There are two Jacob Fishers listed in Sellers book, AMERICAN GUNSMITHS.  One worked in Bedford Co. PA and the other one worked in Canton Ohio.  I would venture to say that that was the one that made this rifle.

Gibster thanks for the info. Canton Ohio would make since, was there any background information on him?

Catter, if you come up with anything definitive about Jacob working in Canton as a gunsmith please post it.  I'll make sure the right people get it so as to be included in the next update to the Ohio books. Thanks, Jack

There is no Jacob Fisher in the WV,VA or Ohio Books. The rifle does look Ohio though.

I agree with AVLRC that the rifle looks like it comes from Ohio or the northern panhandle of W.V.

Rifle is of what we think of as a NY style. Generally west of Syracuse and along the southern shores of Lake Ontario and Lake Erie. Without knowing the dates of Fisher's career I'd guess within a few years of 1860. Probably just prior to but possibly during and a bit after the Civil War.

Obviously this particular style was not confined to a narrow band along the lakes and could have come from areas considerably to the south but in this case I think Ohio would be a fair guess.

Once again... Style is generally that associated with NY. This is not saying a NY gun. I sincerely doubt the piece was made before 1855 and Ohio would be a reasonable place to associate with the maker.
