Very good article. A lot of myths have been circulated concerning Alexander Applebay and his family. I've done a really intense research and this article comes as close to the truth as it can be. Job well done !

Interesting story on Appleby.  The only story I've heard of an itinerant gunsmith regularly moving
about.  Thanks for putting that together.  Enjoyed reading it.
Rightful liberty is unobstructed action according to our will within limits drawn around us by the equal rights of others. I do not add 'within the limits of the law' because law is often but the tyrant's will, and always so when it violates the rights of the individual.

Good to see Reynolds of Alderson in Greenbrier County listed.

Alexander was my Great Grandfather.  His youngest son Hardin, was my grandfather...he passed in 1943 when my father was 15.  I have one complete rifle, a cannon barrel with Wiley Applebay's stamp on it and parts of a 2nd Applebay rifle which went through a fire in 1990.  Would love any additional information on Alexander that anyone could provide.
I'll be taking the parts of the 2nd rifle and rebuilding the rifle in the next few years.

We have a builder here in WVa that is equal or able to surpass any on this forum.
His name is Mike Cox and some of the guns he's made for a local man in my area
are works of art.

I have always liked WV rifles. Especially the carving and the boxes. Very refreshing when compared to what was going on in PA at the same time.

Bob,
I remember seeing Mike Cox's work at F-ship back in the 80's. Always very good stuff with a distinctive style all his own, you could pick one out from across the room.
