Are oval head screws ever OK to use on Hawken wedge escutcheons? Seems most are filed flat. Thanks Dan

I can only speak to the originals I have seen in pictures and they all have flat screw tops  holding the escutcheons in place.  If your not going for a traditional look the oval top screws are no big deal. I see some original longrifles with domed screw heads on patchbox screws. I think they look great personally.

I like this look with the blued oval head screws with the color case hardened escutcheon and wedge. Dan

This is a picture of my personal Hawken rifle I built a few years ago.  I do all my escutcheon plates and screws like this, because they are all filed and polished with the wood.  They are permanent.

Good observation, Whaleman.  Taylor addressed this in his Hawken Build thread - it's worth a read.  (all smoke and mirrors - really- must be, I can't do it  ;D)
