Buffalo Horn, A little Different
« on: February 06, 2016, 11:10:47 PM »
 It is about 12 3/4" around the outside curve, the Base is about 3" and made up form Walnut and Maple, it is attached with the same 5 steel pins that hold the base band in place. The finial is made up of the same but is a separate piece. The two part tip has a Pewter Collar and an Antler tip, attached with 3 steel pins. Each of the bands are also attached with 3 pins each. They were colored by boiling in Gunpowder Green Tea. The patch covers a thin area on the horn, it is also Pewter, held in place with 9 pins and some glue.

Very straight horn for buff Tim. You're right, this is very different. I like it. The laminated butt is interesting. Certainly a different take on a buff horn.

Steve

  Here it is during shaping, there was a big flare at the Butt, I had trouble getting the band to fit so I cut it down to about where the line is. Then while scraping I got the edge so thin, think paper, that I took another 1/2" or so off. At the patch it was still pretty thin hence the patch. So I cut some of the curve out, live and learn.

 Thanks, Tim

Tim,
Very nice, as usual, and very creative. I like the laminated plug but the repair just begs for a little scratching.

Thanks for the additional pictures Tim. Like Eric, the longer I look, the more I see. I like this horn. Very interesting. Occasionally we just need to let our imagination run wild. Gus Taber does this from time to time. It's great to view the results.

Tim, I like your horn.  Hey, you don't need anyone's approval for correctness of style design with your talent.  Keep it up and thanks for posting the pictures!

I love the little arabi knob on the base.  Tim, how did you make the base of the horn?

I love the little arabi knob on the base.  Tim, how did you make the base of the horn?

 I started with two pieces about 2 X 2 X 10, set the Miter saw for 30 degs and made one cut, then back to 90 and made another, repeat until you have 6 of each. The marks are where I tried to keep the grain straight. Then make pairs and glue them up, once they are set you can either glue 3 pairs together to make a semicircle or glue two sets of pairs to make 3 sets of 4. Easier to make the semicircles, if you need to do any sanding to get them to fit, they can be a little bit off.
 Next take a Spade or Forstner bit and drill out a hole so you can mount it on a 4 Jaw chuck, You could just turn it between centers if you want. Turn one end down to fit the horn and shape the rest as you like.
 This method is using end grain if you wanted you could make the cylinder with parallel grain and be able to turn the Button out of the same piece.
 I hope this makes sense, just ask if it doesn't and I will try and clear it up.

 Glued up as groups of three;

 Pushed together but not glued;

 If you want more or less segments divide 360 by the number you want and that will give you your angle. On this one there are 12 segments so 360 divided by 12 give the 30degree angle. There are other ways but this is the simplest.
