Without any markings or inscriptions, is it possible to determine the approx. age of a powder horn. There are 4 very small nails or what looks like brads securing the "top". The nails have a rectangular shaped head and look to be hand made. Otherwise the color which is mostly dark on both ends seems to indicate the horn has been around for quite some time. Is there any way to tell?

 Need a picture,even then it will be difficult to age, IMMHO.

Generally horns became smaller as time progressed.  I don't trust dates on horns unless there is a strong provenance.

Generally it is easier to guess how old a horn is NOT.  As mentioned above there are a lot of things to take into consideration.  The style, color, context (if engraved).
