Trigger help
« on: February 29, 2016, 05:25:02 AM »
Bought this set trigger at the york shoot several years ago from the rice barrel guys. Well i was working on a 36 cal and was going to use it on the gun, but i tried to bend with out annealing it first. Well guess what ,i broke it right where the spring screw was. Welded it back and could not tap it because it was so hard. Been bubing it every since then. I need a new plate, spring and screw. My question is what kind is it and where can i find one? Or just buy another and continue on?

Have you contacted Rice barrels?  If they produced the lock they may have the parts you need.

Have you tried annealing it?

Another option might be to cut the plate off half-way between the screw hole and the rear trigger, weld a new piece on and drill and tap that.

If your bend was downward, that would reduce the spring pressure on the trigger.  Might need to add a bit more bend to the spring, too.

Not sure who made it, but the rear spring is too flat not giving you the "kick" you need. I wouldn't install it with the nut and bolt on the spring. You tried annealing by heating it red and letting it cool slow before tapping the plate?

L. Akers that is a good idea about the plate. I did end up annealing the thing but the damage was done allready. Just had the bolt on there to see if i could get pressure on the trigger. How do you bend spring steel? I need to look that up..

Gently.  You may be able to move it a bit by cold bending.  I make flat springs from 1095 spring steel and draw them to 900 degrees in my lead pot and I can move them a bit cold.  If your spring was drawn to a lower temp. it will be more resistant to bending and more prone to breaking.  The safest thing would be to anneal, re-form and re-harden and temper it.
