Looking for Family Horn
« on: March 18, 2016, 12:37:03 AM »
I know that it's a longshot, but it's better than no shot.  The horn pictured below was previously owned by my Wife's 5th Great Grandfather (at least that's the story) and we are trying to locate it.  It had been passed down through the family, but no one seems to know the current location or owner.  So either someone isn't talking or it got out of the family and again, someone isn't talking.  I figure if it is out there somewhere, there is a chance that someone here may have seen it.  The bands don't look to be applied but rather carved from the horn.  It is unique enough that once seen, I think it would be remembered.  The name McCracken may be on the horn, but don't know for sure.  If you have seen this horn, I would appreciate if you would let me know.  Thanks.

Just curious, it this a black and white photo, or is the horn dark colored?

WOW, that is an interesting horn. I sure hope you are able to track it down. What area of the country did your 5th GGF live in.

I would think its Rev war time period, my 3rd GGF fought in that war so I would assume your 5th would as well.

Big Wolf - The picture is black and white and I have no idea how ling ago it was taken.

Dennis - It really is an interesting horn and I would really like to take a close look at it.  Her 5th G Grandfather lived in NC and he was granted a land grant in Burks County following the war.  The horn may very well date to the Rev war.  If out of the family, which I feel sure it is, it would be great to be able to buy it and return to the family. Don't know if that is possible or not.  Have to find it first.

What was his name?

One might search a couple of ways on computer but it would really help to know who he was.

I went through ancestry.com looking for George S Davis   Got some info in the 1860 census, birth dates & states he, wife & children. Nothing later.

Which only means one cannot find him in census records.

So I googled his name. Lo & Behold someone in his family had the unending patience to get up a family tree. It is in ancestry's archives.

Go thou and do likewise with whatzisname

JC Kelly - His name was David McCracken and yes, there has been extensive research done on this family.  Finding out information on him isn't what we are looking for.  We are just trying to locate this horn which is rumored to have belonged to either him, or his brother.  It was passed down to David's son and had stayed in the family for several generations. But nobody in the family that we have spoken to seems to know the whereabouts of the horn.

Gibster,
Look at www.historiccars on house.com

It was built in 1793 in western Burke County near Marion..  It is now a museum.  I visited a few years ago and remember a similar banded powder horn.  You might call them and request some photos of it.

When you go down to the Tenn. show take along a picture of the horn. That's a group that collects southern banded horns. They would remember that one. You might also show Noble he never forgets anything.   JIM
