Touch hole liner size- Newbie question
« on: March 24, 2016, 03:38:39 AM »
Double checking what size touch hole I should be using (not even close to that step yet on my rifle). Barrel is a Bill Large 45 cal swamped, measure about 1" at the breech and 7/16 flats. The touchhole liner I ordered (white lighting) is the 1/4x32 thread. Should I move up to a 3/8?

IMHO, the 1/4x32 is just fine.

The 1/4" will be just fine. You can always open it up to 5/16 or 3/8.

Jim Chambers website has this to say about his White Lightning vent liners:

3/8" x 32 for 1 1/16" or larger barrels #THL-01
5/16" x 32 for 7/8" & 1" barrels #THL-02
1/4" x 32 for 7/8" and smaller barrels #THL-03

moleeyes36 Chambers website was exactly why I asked, that being said the smaller size does give me plenty of meat to reline after 20k rounds or so  ;D

I was mainly checking if there was a reason for performance etc, makes sense if its a much larger barrel a larger liner makes sense. My shooter now has a 45 cal GM straight 13/16 barrel that I believe has the 1/4 touchhole and the flat's are just a hair over 5/16.

Go with the ¼" .  Long term, you can go up if damaged, and the ¼" will work great.

Anymore I just use 1/4" in everything, they work just fine and it leaves the option open to move up if for some reason the threads get damaged in the future.

I use the 1/4 inch on everything. If you use the bigger ones, the fence gets even further away from the breech.

I used 1/4" on my 50 caliber swamped barrel.  In my mind it's the ID of the touch hole that is more important than the OD of the liner.
